Somalia: Al-Shabab Car Bomb Driver Executed in Mogadishu (PHOTOS)

MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) — Somali Military Court today on Thursday executed an Al-Shabab member who drove a suicide car that exploded in Mogadishu’s Beerta Market on November last year, Somali Update reports.

According to Somali Military Court Judge Hassan Nur Shute, the convicted Al-Shabab member named Abdiqadir Abdi Hassan was arrested days after the 26th November, 2016 car bomb that killed at least 10 and wounded 15 others.
“Abdiqadir Abdi Hassan was an Al-Shabab driver and was tasked to carry suicide car bomb attack in Mogadishu. He parked the car on the road in the Suuqa Beerta Market before the car exploded. He fled but the security forces managed to arrest him.” Judge Shute said.
Following several hearings against Abdiqadir Abdi Hassan, the military court sentenced him on death sentence on February 2nd, 2017.
The Thursday’s execution took place in a public place at the General Kahiye Police Academy in Mogadishu. Residents of nearby neighborhoods gathered to watch as the firing squad shot the convicted Al—Shabab driver.
The country’s military court seems to have scaled up death sentence cases against Al-Shabab members and government soldiers convicted of killing citizens and fellow soldiers following President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s pledge to deal with the insecurity factors in Mogadishu.
Somalia is among the few countries in the world that use death penalties and usually are carried in open fields by a firing squad.
